There has never been anything in my life, besides giving my life to Christ, that has affected me as much as Shawreth has. This first semester, rushing Shawreth has been a life changing experience. The many, many weeks of rush, and being around the 20 guys i rushed with has been amazing. We have built relationships with each other that are unbreakable. We have been there for each other in the good times and the bad. We have been there for each other when we didn't think we could go on. We have experience so much crap together, but at the same time, we have experiened so much love together by everyone. I know now that I have 20 guys that I can call and confied in and tell them anything, and know it to be safe with them. If I'm in a rut, I know that they are right beside me trying to get me out. These guys mean so much to me, its not really describable in words. One really has to experience it to truley understand the meaning behind it. I have only been a Shawreth for about 3 weeks now, but I can truley say that I know what it means to be a Shawreth. Sure, I have 3 more years to keep finding out what it means, cause it changes everyday, as things are revealed to me. Shawreth is not perfect in any way, but it is something that I hold true to my heart and something that I will forever love. I will forever love my 65 brothers that are in Shawreth. They mean the world to me, and I do my best to alsways be there for them.

Anyway, haha, hope everyone has an awesome couple weeks of School!
Good luck on Finals!
Derek Walker ><>

Camp Balcones Springs (BLOG #8)

This summer is going to be awesome! As mentioned in previous post, I LOVE TO TRAVEL AND GO EVERYWHERE BUT HOME! haha

This summer I am going to be Working at Camp Balcones Springs in Marble Falls, Texas, Real close to Austin, Texas.
Alex Vance, earlier in the year, told me about this awesome camp for kids. So, after checking it out on the internet, i was like, YEA!, i wanna work here this summer. The pay is not going to be the best, but its working with Kids and building relationships with them, which is what i love.
Over the past couple of year, I have had multiple experiences working with children. My tenth and eleventh grade year, I was an art teacher at a Day care for Children ranging 1st to 5th grade. Then, this past summer, I was the children's, preschool, and youth intern at my home church. So, working with children and building those relationships is something i love. What I have found out is that the true light of the world, and true happiness is found in children because the world has not "captured" and "influenced" them like they have teens and older adults. They are so pure and do what they want, say what they feel, and act the way they act. I love children.

This camp is gonna be awesoem, and I can't wait for the summer! Camp Balcones Springs...HERE I COME!!!! This thanksgiving really has ment alot to me. It was the first time I had really gone home for more than a couple hours and stayed home. it was the first time I got to see some of my old friends from highschool...the ones that were home from college atleast. It was the first time in a while I got to go to my church back home. Overall, I would say that I was kinda disappointed haha. Alot of my friends back home were no different than they used to be. They still acted the way they always did and it really just bothered me. My parents, and getting to see them, however, was awesome. They were just how they used to be and that was awesome! We went and ate Olive Garden and just talked and got caught up with everything. Church was about the same. Alot of the youth that were there before I left were still there, plus some! haha

Some ideas I came up with after Christmas
I think i am going to go on a Cruise for Spring Break, but not sure where yet
I am going to visit Jared in Valdosta Georgia ( 9 hour drive, boop boop! )
I am going to take a day trip to New Orleans
I am goign to travel to Nashville sometime haha.

you can probabaly see I love to travel.
O and one day I am going to travel to the Grand Canyon! haha

Godbless!
Derek Walker

After Thanksgiving Thoughts (BLOG #7)

Thanksgiving (BLOG #6)

Thanksgiving this year was not tooo bad. The food was amazing, as usual and the break away from school wasn't bad. over the course of the break, I drove to Vicksburg and visited my cousin that I hadn't seen in a while. I also hung out with a couple guys from Shawreth. Myself, seth, brandon, Jared and some of his family from Georgia all went and say Role Model...which was awesome; the language was kinda rought, but the movie was great overall, really funny. Also, during the break i went and saw Role Models again with Oliver, Amy, and a couple other people.

I am addictied to Phase 10. Well, last night my parents and I were eating at Cock of the Walk ( its a fish restaurant) and we met up with Jared's family. It so happened that they were goign to play Phase 10 after they left eating, so i jumped on that. After they got home, Jared gave me a call and I left for Clinton. It got down the 5 out of the 6 pople on phase 10, me being one of them, and Jared's mom winning. I was soooo Close. But anyway! haha

I hope that everyone had an awesome thanksgiving. I hope that the break was long enough to get caught up on some sleep, get some good food, and get ready to finish out the semester strong.
God Bless,
Derek Walker

Almost Finished (BLOG #5)

hey hey hey!

Well, this past week has been a wild one, haha. Rush stuff has been going on as usual and thank goodness I am almost done. Just a little bit longer. One thing I have really enjoyed however about rush has been the friendships ive made over the course of the weeks of rush. Having to do things with each of the actives and associates( pledges) has been an awesome experience. One awesome thing that happend on the 25 of October was my birthday. I had a TON OF RUSH STUFF TO DO ON THAT DAY, and didn't think i would have any time to just relax, and it came true. When I was done with rushs tuff, i was handed a letter that eventually led me all around campus and whatnot. In the end, i was led to Hederman-gunter lobby where most of my rush brother and some actives, as well as about 30 other people gave me a surprise birthday party! It was awesome.

School has been school. Classes, up to now have, and I don't wanna sound mean, been really boring. I have yet to be challenged in the clases that I want to be challengned in and in others I havn't been challenged at all. I have not really learned much in my art classes, which is my major, and this bothers me because im paying all this money and I still haven't learned anything! Ahhh. Anyway, I Hope things get better.

I guess there is nothing else to really say. I am having an awesome time here at Mississippi College and I believe everythign is going well. The caf is horrible, but i expected that. I havn't really had any free time ( o well, its rush) Freshman Experience and Chapel are over...thank goodness, I can now actually use that time wisely (woop woop). anyway...enough with random stuff. Hope everyone has an awesome week!

Godbless,
Derek Walker ><>

Busy Busy Week...AHHHH (BLOG #4)

Hey peeps!

It's been a little while since I've been on here but things have been super busy! Ahhh. Rush has been hard, time consuming, stressful, and everything else. Life at MC has been busy as well. Classes have been somewhat boring over the course of the semester, but overall, everything is going well. So far, rush, has as mentioned above has been pretty hard. We have something to do at least every night. Sometimes its fun and sometimes its not, but overall I can see that it all has some purpose behind it. If you don't know already, I'm rushing Shawreth. Shawreth is such an awesome club on campus and I know that I don't fit in anywhere else (well club that is).

School has been goign well. I've just been really busy over the course of the past copule of weeks really preparing for History. History is really the only subject that I have been studying for, becuase it the only class that I've really had a test in. I just tured in my paper for english the other day and did pretty well. I got a B on it becuase i need to work on the introduction and conclusion. I need to start moving away from the Five paragraph essay approach and just try to revamp everything.

Other than school and rush, life has been well. I've been chilling alot on campus, and not going home very much. I'm not saying that home is bad, it's just I enjoy staying on campus over the weekend cause its a great way to catch up on some rest and just chill. I have also been busy dealing with Church a lot. I am currently the Intern at my home church in Madison, and I have been preparing over the course of the weeks because i am goign to have to preach to the youth this wednesday (tonight)! I'm pretty excited about this, so it's gonna be great. Overall, I don't think I have too much more to say at this point! I just hope everyone has an awesome week this week and for those of us that are going through rush and the one's that are not, I hope all goes well!

God bless,
Derek Walker

The Past Week (BLOG #3)

This past week has been...lets just say, exausting! I decided that I would rush. I camped out. I went home. I had test. I had work. I HAD NO SLEEP! However, I am still going.

On my last post, I mentioned that my mom was going throuhg some rough stuff right now dealing with a spot on her leg that may have been cancerious. By the grace and love of only God, we got the results back and there is no cancer. This was such great news for me because cancer has been goign on in my mother's life and really the entire family now for about the past 11 plus years. So, to know that the test came back negative for cancer, it is awesome!

Rush has started and for the next five weeks it gonna be hectic. However, I'm ready. Thank goodness that my classes are not challenging, this semester anyways. School work, as just mentioned, has really been easy thus far. No one class has been extremely difficult, just had to study for history the most. Those test cover so much information...blahh. Anyways, I Hope that everyone has a great week. Be praying for all the rushees that each of us can time manage well and get everythign done!

God Bless,
Derek Walker

What a Hectic Week (BLOG #2)

Wow, this past week has been pretty stressful for me! I have gone back and fourth between rush. I still can't decide if I want to rush or if I don't want to rush. There are so many good and bad things about the whole process, I just can't seem to make up my mind. The main thing I believe that I'm having a hard time with is the commitment. I've already committed to so many things its hard for me to even think about committing to five weeks of rush....espically since I don't really know what I'm committing myself to..AHH!

Overall, school has been a joke up to now. Studies have been super easy except for history. There is just so much information that you have to know for the test, its just ridiculous....and history has always been something that I never really got interested in, which doesn't help at all. Another thing is my major. My major being interior design has really been awesome. One, there is really no studying involved, it more just lab work...so some days its weird when everyone else has stuff to do and I don't have anything. (hope that doesn't make anyone mad :P)

As far as other stuff...right now I've just got a lot going on in my mind. I'm still trying to figure where I fit in...I know I am in the right place, just still got a few things that are bothering me. One major thing that is on my mind right now would be my mom. She went to the doctor a coule of days ago and there is a spot on her leg that might be cancerous. They did a biopsy and we will get the results back in a couple of days. If she does have cancer, it will be here fifth time fighting cancer.

Anyway, can't think of really anything else to write for now...so..
God Bless,
Derek Walker

I've been waiting for this for so long....College is finally here...(BLOG #1)

Not until December 15, did I really decide that Mississippi College was the college for me. I had searched and searched for colleges all over the south, but I never felt that they were the college for me. I applied at Mississippi State, paid my housing fee and everything but never really felt comfortable. I actually never even visited the campus. So, for the longest time, I wobbled back and fourth between Mississippi States, SCAD, Auburn and many others and eventually decided that i would check out Mississippi College. One night, December 15th, I was over at a friends house, and she was telling me all about MC, and all the opportunities and everything that it offered. She was also telling me about scholarship opportunities, which really caught my attention. See, scholarship amounts were one of the main factors that would lead me to a college or away from it. In the end, I applied for MC and recieved almost a full ride! The uneasy feeling I had in my stomach completely went away and by that I knew that MC was the place for me.

Now that we have started classes and I am getting used to the "college life", I am so excited that I chose Mississippi College. The atmosphere here is unlike anything I have ever seen. The people, no matter who you walk up to and talk with, are so welcoming and nice. Even though I've only been here for about a week now, I already feel accountable. I know that i am not a part of a number, but rather someone that is accountable. If I am not there, someone notices!

Overall, Classes have not been challenging..not yet! The teachers are awesome and are so welcoming. The activities on campus during "Welcome Week: The Best Week Ever" have been great and have really been a way for people to meet other people and already start that bonding experience. All I have to say is that Mississippi College is awesome, and I can't wait for what is to come!
Godbless,
Derek

Just A Lil' INTROduction

Well, here I am...sitting in the computer lab just chilling typing up this blog. Today, already, has started off to be interesting. I had a nine o'clock class this morning and unfortionalty I woke up at 8:50..WOW! I told myself last night that I would try and get up this morning to go to the spin class that the Baptist Health Plex offers, which by the way is at 5:30, but yea, that NEVER happened. I ended up, right before going to sleep last night, setting my alarm clock for about 8:15 this morning. I, however, never heard it go off. If it had not been for the guys across the hall slamming their door this morning, I would probabaly still be asleep right now, instead of being here. Thanks to them ( really thanks Chase and Garrett) I was able to get up and take my Quiz in my US History class and what not. But, anyway, i actually think I may need to be like writing something about myself on this post, so here it goes!

My name is Derek Walker, im 18 right now, but about to turn 19 in October! I have lived in Madison MS for my entire life and watched it grow from nothing to everything. I have two great parents who I love with all my heart and who mean everyting to me. I currently am a member at FBC Madison and am the Youth Intern there through December. I love to travel, espically on mission related trips. Over the past couple of years i have been many places including Anchorage, Alaska, Greece, Chicago, Tennessee, and many other places. I love traveling, but most of all, I truely love giving of my time to help others. I have always been the type to help others before myself. I truely believe, just as it says in the bible, that who ever puts themself last will be first later on. I want to be a servant to others and not myself, because that's what Jesus did. Right before he was crucified, he washed all of his disciples feet and made himself the very last! Anyway, haha, I am currently at Mississippi College as a freshman, and LOVING IT!!!!! The teachers, students, well, EVERYONE, here is amazing. It truely dose'nt matter who you go up to, everyone here is just so nice and welcoming that it feels like your back home just talking with friends. O yea, I really enjoy drawing, painting, well really anything that deals with ART IN GENERAL! But, I don't take all the credit for what I do. If God did not bless me with the tallents he has given me, I would not be able to do the things I do, say the things I say, or act the way I act! It is only by Him, that I am able to achieve everything I do.

Ya know, maybe I rambled on and on an on about alot of stuff, but hey, haha, who cares! I hope that, if you choose to read through this point, you have enjoyed it!

Just have on more thing to share with you.
JOHN 14:6
"I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the father except through me."
Thanks and talk with ya next time!
Derek Walker ><>
